How to create a QR code for free: link, text, Wi-Fi or contact
Why make your own QR code
QR codes are the quickest way to move something from a screen or a printed page onto a phone: a website link, a Wi-Fi password, a contact card or a short note. You see them on menus, flyers, business cards and event posters.
The QR Code Generator on NetworkTools lets you make one without installing anything or signing up. The code is generated locally in your browser, so what you type stays on your device.
Step by step
- Open the QR Code Generator. Under Settings you will find the data type buttons: Text, URL, Wi-Fi and vCard (Contact).
- Pick the data type and type or paste your content into the field below. For a website, enter the full address, for example https://networktools.cloud.
The QR Code Generator before you enter data: data type buttons and an empty input field - Optionally adjust the Size slider (256 px by default) and the Error Correction Level. A higher correction level lets the code stay readable even if part of it is covered or damaged, at the cost of a denser pattern. You can also add a logo with the Add Logo area.
- The QR code appears on the right as soon as there is content to encode. Scan it with your phone to check that it opens what you expect.
Result: the generated QR code on the right with the Download and Clear buttons below - Click Download to save the QR code image. Use Clear if you want to start over with different content.
Tips for a QR code that scans reliably
- Always test it. Scan the code with at least one phone before printing it or sending it out.
- Keep the content short. The less data you encode, the simpler the pattern and the easier it is to scan. A short link scans better than a long one.
- Leave a quiet margin. Do not crop the white border around the code, and keep it away from other graphics.
- Go bigger for print. The farther away the code will be scanned from, the larger it should be. For posters, increase the size.
- Be careful with logos. A logo covers part of the pattern. If you add one, raise the error correction level and test again.
- Choose the right data type. Use URL for web pages, Wi-Fi for network details and vCard for a contact card, so phones know what to do with the code.
FAQ
Is the QR Code Generator free?
Yes. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark added by the tool.
Is the text I enter sent to a server?
No. The QR code is generated locally in your browser.
What can I put in a QR code?
Plain text, a URL, Wi-Fi network details or a contact card (vCard).
What does the error correction level do?
It controls how much of the code can be damaged or covered while it still scans. Higher levels are more forgiving but produce a denser pattern.
